Macrodosing: A Beginners Guide
Macrodosing is a way of stepping fully into the moment. Whether to shift perspective, reconnect with self, explore the deeper layers of consciousness, or even experience joy.
This guide is here to support you in preparing for a macrodose experience with care. Regardless of the substance—Psilocybin, LSD, MDMA—what matters most is your mindset, your environment, and your intention.
What Is a Macrodose?
A macrodose is a dose high enough to alter perception and induce a full psychoactive experience. It’s not something to take lightly or spontaneously, these are tools we encourage to use intentionally.
Common starting points for macrodosing:
Cannabis: 20mg (in edibles)
Psilocybin: 1g or more (dried mushrooms or extract equivalent)
MDMA: 100mg or more
LSD: 100 micrograms (µg) or more
The effects at these doses can include expanded sensory awareness, time distortion, heightened emotions, and deep introspection. For many, it can feel like a waking dream.
Before your journey: Set and setting
Set & Setting
These two elements, your mindset and your physical environment, shape your entire experience.
Choose a safe and calm space.
Make your surroundings cozy: blankets, pillows, soft lighting, comforting textures.
Clear your schedule. No calls, no errands. Give yourself a full day to experience and if possible, a day after to process and integrate.
Turn off your phone or put it on do not disturb.
Preparation Checklist
Hydrate throughout the day beforehand.
Eat lightly, not on a full stomach, but not totally empty either.
Have nourishing food ready for after the journey (something easy to digest and grounding like fruit, broth, or toast).
Set an intention. Write it down. This could be as simple as “I want to listen to what my body needs,” or as expansive as “I’m seeking clarity about a relationship.”
Consider a sitter, a trusted, sober person who can support you, especially for first-time or high-dose experiences.
During: Let go, allow yourself to be present
Let go of expectations. The experience may be joyful, emotional, strange, or all of the above.
You don’t have to do anything. Rest. Listen to music. Close your eyes. Move gently if it feels right.
If you feel overwhelmed, try to ground with your senses, touch something soft, sip water, take a few slow breaths.
Journaling or voice notes can help capture insights, but aren’t required. Your presence is enough.
After: Integration is key
The journey doesn’t end when the effects wear off. What you do with what came up is where the transformation happens.
Take time, at least 1–4 weeks before considering another macrodose.
Rest, reflect, and restore. This might be journaling, talking with a friend, drawing, or simply walking in silence.
Seek support if big emotions or realizations surface. Therapists, integration circles, and trusted guides can all help.
Ask yourself: What did I learn? What am I being invited to shift or release?
Macrodosing is not about chasing intensity. It’s about entering the experience with intention, safety, and giving yourself time to come back to center afterward.
At Medly, we believe that recreational use can be therapeutic when approached with intention, care, and accurate dosing. Whether you're exploring for the first time or returning to these tools, know that you deserve a journey that feels grounded, supported, and aligned with your growth.
